Saturn Astra is a
compact car that will be produced beginning with the 2008 model year by the Saturn Corporation division of United States automaker General Motors. It will be a Badge engineering
Opel Astra intended to replace the
Saturn ION as the company's smallest model. The Astra will be built in Antwerp, Belgium.
The 2008 Saturn Astra will be sold in three-door (XR Only) and five-door (XE or XR)
hatchback body styles, with sales starting on January 2, 2008. The Astra will use a 1.8L
GM_Family_II_engine#Ecotec straight-4 gasoline engine with
VVT producing and be mated to a four-speed automatic transmission or a five-speed
manual transmission. Saturn will not build a "
redline" version of the Astra for the 2008 model year.
Because the Saturn Astra will not be available as a sedan, GM is predicting sales of between 30,000 and 40,000 a year, less than half the 100,000 achieved by the ION. The Saturn Astra debuted during the 2007
Chicago Auto Show.
